The Bees for Development Sunflower Quilt

Dr. Diana Sammataro, Hope Johnson, and their respective quilt guilds in Arizona and Vermont have partnered to create a community quilt to raise funds for food security, biodiversity, and increased standard of living, using the example set bythe industrious honeybee.

With sunflower applique blocks from over 36 members of the Champlain Valley Quilter’s Guild VT and the Tucson Quilters Guild, AZ, the Bees for Development Sunflower Quilt made its debut at the Eastern Apicultural Society Conference in Guelph, Ontario, August 10th to the 14th, 2015. Ms. Johnson designed the pattern, pieced the top, appliquéd the central bee medallion, and quilted the quilt. The quilt was purchased by a beekeeping couple from Rhode Island, and all proceeds from the sale of the quilt have been given to Bees for Development’s beekeeping center in Ethiopia.

Evelyn George, Member-At-Large of the Tucson Quilters Guild, spoke well to theproject when she said, “…bees are very special to us quilters as symbols of workingtogether for betterment of the community.”
